Sport Inclusion Disability Charter

 

Badminton Ireland are delighted to confirm that we have signed up to the Sport Inclusion Disability Charter.

This is the first ever Charter in Ireland which is specific to the participation of people with disabilities in sport and physical activity. The Charter outlines five key areas that people with disabilities are asking organisations to consider in making active and healthy lifestyles possible for them.

We encourage all of our clubs to support the inclusion of people with a disability in badminton by signing up to the charter at the following link; https://caracentre.ie/sport-inclusion-disability-charter/. Ensure to notify development@badmintonireland.com when your club has committed to the Charter, and make sure to publicise and promote the commitment on club social media accounts. 

Throughout the year we aim to honour our commitment to the Charter by taking 50 steps which make us a more inclusive organisation in 2019. These steps can also be followed on our website and social media platforms.

#Step1 Badminton Ireland commit to the Sport Inclusion Disability Charter and encourage clubs to sign up to the Charter.

#Step2 Badminton Ireland circulates a survey to determine current inclusive practices among its Member Organisations nationwide. Questions for the survey were based off the five key areas of the Charter.

#Step3 Badminton Ireland introduce the three Irish Athletes who will compete for Team Ireland in Badminton at the 2019 Special Olympic World Summer Games . Sarah Rea, John Doyle, Mary Daly, and their coaches Kim McCrave and Claire Heffernan will make the trip to the Games taking place in Abu Dhabi in March.

#Step4 Badminton Ireland promote two of our Para-Badminton athletes; Niall McVeigh and Andrew Moorcroft who compete internationally for Ireland. Both athletes train with, and are affiliated to Alpha Badminton Club in County Antrim.

#Step5 Badminton Ireland highlight training courses provided by CARA to upskill people in delivering inclusive activities.

#Step6 Badminton Ireland Development Officer attended a Sports Ability Meeting with Kildare Sports Partnership to grow inclusive badminton in the county.

#Step9 Badminton Ireland teamed up with Meath Sports Ability/Meath Sports Partnership to deliver a session as part of a joint initiative between Prosper Ashbourne and TY students from Coláiste De Lacy Ashbourne.

#Step10 Badminton Ireland announce that the Cara Sport Inclusion Ireland training and education workshops are officially included as part of the Badminton Ireland CPD Points System.

#Step11 Badminton Ireland in conjunction with Meath Sports Ability, Louth Local Sports Partnership, Cavan Sports Partnership, and Monaghan Sports Partnership, delivered taster sessions to 30+ participants as part of the North East Services Inclusive Day.

#Step12 Badminton Ireland promoted athletes who traveled to the YONEX Canada Para-Badminton International 2019. Niall McVeigh, Chris Stewart and Michael Smith traveled to Ottawa with coach Les Dewart.

#Step13 Badminton Ireland state how the organisations school programmes are fully inclusive to ensure equal opportunities are provided for people with disabilities to participate in the sport among participating schools.

#Step14 of our commitment to the Sports Inclusion Disability Charter is to circulate this CARA Centre factsheet which may inform coaching practices for coaches working with amputee players in their club.

#Step15 Badminton Ireland are circulating a CARA Centre factsheet that will offer some advice for coaches coaching Wheelchair Users in their clubs. Also provided, a Wheelchair User Manual (Scottish Disability Sport) which will provide coaches with Badminton specifc advice.

#Step16 of Badminton Ireland's commitment to the Sports Inclusion Disability Charter is to educate our members on the Role of Classifiers and the process to becoming part of the BWF Classification Panel for Para-Badminton Events. The information below will also discuss the BWF Classification Categories.

#Step17 of the 50 steps to becoming a more inclusive organisation is to send all of our clubs CARA Centre Fact-sheets giving them a little bit of information on some disabilities that may affect people playing badminton and how clubs and coaches can include those with disabilities in their sessions.

#Step18 of our commitment to the Sports Inclusion Disability Charter is to promote our FZ Forza Irish Para-Badminton International that takes place in the National Indoor Arena next week. Competition days are from the 19th-23rd of June. Players will be coming from around the world to compete for crucial ranking points to qualify for the Paralympics in Tokyo 2020.

#Step19 of our commitment to the Sports Inclusion Disability Charter is to provide a round up of the Irish players progress in the FZ Forza Irish Para-Badminton International in the National Indoor Arena.

#Step20 Badminton Ireland are circulating a CARA Centre Fact-sheet that will offer some advice for coaches coaching those with Cerebral Palsy in their clubs. This fact-sheet details what Cerebral Palsy (CP) is, the different forms of CP and how coaches can include people with CP in their sessions.

#Step21 of the 50 steps Badminton Ireland are taking to become a more inclusive organisation is to circulate a CARA Centre Fact-Sheet. Today's fact-sheet is focused on those with Intellectual Disabilities. The fact-sheet will discuss what an Intellectual Disability is, how they are classified, the different types, it will also talk about the different characteristics that those with an Intellectual Disabilities have. Lastly, coaches/clubs will be given some advice on including those with Intellectual Disabilities in their coaching sessions.

#Step22 of Badminton Ireland's commitment to inclusive activities is to circulate a CARA Centre Fact-Sheet on Vision Impairment. This fact-sheet talks about what a visual impairment is, what coaches may notice with their athletes and how they can include them in their sessions. Lastly, this fact-sheet talks about the different forms of vision impairment.

#Step23 a member of the Badminton Ireland Development Team delivered a Para-Badminton Taster Session with Offaly Sports Partnership as part of their Multi-Sports Camp.

#Step24 a member of the Badminton Ireland Development Team delivered a Para-Badminton Taster Session with Laois Sports Partnership as part of their Multi Sports Camp which took place in Portlaoise.

#Step25 of Badminton Ireland's commitment to the Sports Inclusion Disability Charter is to circulate the final CARA Centre Fact-Sheet. The last fact-sheet will talk about athletes that are Deaf or are Hard of Hearing. The fact-sheet will talk about what deafness is, how coaches can include those who are deaf or hard of hearing in their coaching sessions and how clubs can educate their members and umpires/referees on how to assist.

#Step26 a member of the Badminton Ireland Team delivered a Para-Badminton Taster Session in conjunction with Meath Sports Ability as part of their Multi Sports camp.

#Step27 of Badminton Ireland's commitment to the Sports Inclusion Disability Charter is to promote CARA Centre Inclusion Continuum. The Inclusion Continuum provides coaches/clubs with a framework of the variety of practices for making badminton inclusive at an appropriate level for participants with disabilities in their sessions. Moreover, coaches/clubs can apply the CARA TREE (Teaching,Rules,Equipment,Environment) Model to any type of activity on the Continuum to modify and adapt your activities to make them more inclusive and accessible for all abilities.

#Step28 Badminton Ireland are delighted to confirm that they will have a taster session and an information stand at the upcoming Kildare Sports Ability Day run by Kildare Sports Partnership.

#Step29 National Para Squad Coach Patricia Gallagher is certified after completing the Badminton Europe Para Coaching Course, thus becoming the seventh Irish representative to be accredited on this course.

#Step30 Badminton Ireland, in conjunction with ADHD Ireland and Dublin City Sports and Wellbeing Partnershipare delivering a six week beginner programme for adults with ADHD.

#Step31 Round up of Niall McVeigh's last 3 tournaments. Niall made it to the Quarter Finals of tournaments in Thailand, China & Denmark. In Denmark Niall went on to win the MD SS6 with partner Isaak Dalglish of England.

#Step32 Badminton Ireland National Para Squads are due to take place on the 17th of November in the National Indoor Arena. The fee for all participants will be €15 and the squads will take place from 15:00-17:30. Why not come down and try some badminton!

#Step33 Badminton Ireland welcomed St. Cecila’s Special School, Special Olympics Club Shuttle Stars and two Cavan Sports coaches who will run inclusive sessions in Cavan to the Sligo Teacher Training Shuttle Time Course.

#Step34 Badminton Ireland Development Team will have a stand at the upcoming Dun-Laoghaire-Rathdown SportAbility Open Evening 2019. This open evening will showcase sports and social groups for people with a disability and their families and it takes place on the 25th of November from 4-6pm in Explorium Ireland, Sandyford.

#Step35 Badminton Ireland and the Sport Ireland Campus teamed up to deliver CARA Centre Disability Inclusion Training for staff and coaches of both organisations. The workshop will benefit coaches delivering on the new Pan-Disabilty club which will be launched in partnership by both organisations in 2020.

#Step36 Badminton Ireland marked the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by highlighting its affiliated bodies who have supported the movement to making Badminton more inclusive in 2019 by signing-up to the CARA Centre Charter.

#Step37 Badminton Ireland announce that funding has been secured through Sport Ireland's Dormant Accounts Fund to deliver a combined schools and inclusion programme in 2020. The 'Leaders of the Future' programme will provide participating groups with access to; Formal and Informal Coach Education, social play and participation opportunities in non-competitive environments, and opportunities to develop club-group links.

#Step38 Badminton Ireland welcomed Ballyowen Meadow's Special School and Prosper Fingal who provide services and support to adults with intellectual disabilities to our Teacher Training Shuttle Time course in Dublin yesterday.

#Step39 Badminton Ireland welcomed 6 Special Schools or schools with ASD classes to the Teacher Training course in Kilcullen Community Centre in Kildare.

#Step40 Badminton Ireland are delighted to announce that we have been selected to pilot the CARA Centre Xcessible programme in 2020.This initiative will see CARA Centre support and empower us as a National Governing Body to develop our inclusive practices under the headings of openness, people, activities, facilities, and promotion.
